Feb 6 Guest Speaker:  Alan Pitts, W1AGP
ARRL Media and Public Relations Manager
Past President of NARL

Alan will address with slides and videos the new ARRL Do-it-Yourself (DIY) initiative to reach out to the growing numbers of “makers” who are not content to just be consumers of mass produced products. They like to create things for themselves and celebrate a level of non-dependence. If that sounds like most hams – it is! We have a lot in common. Learn what is being done to reach out nationally and talk about how you can use this opportunity locally.

Alan Pitts, W1AGP, is an Amateur Extra class licensee who lives in New Britain, Connecticut, and works as Media and Public Relations Manager for the ARRL, American Radio Relay League. Pitts came to the ARRL in September, 2004. Pitts emphasizes that while he takes his public relations role most seriously, he also wants it understood that he’s an active radio amateur and “not just a PR person.”

A radio amateur since 1999, he’s no stranger to the ARRL Field Organization, having served as an ARES District Emergency Coordinator and later as Connecticut’s Section Emergency Coordinator and an ARRL Assistant Section Manager.  Pitts is active on HF, VHF and UHF. Although primarily a phone operator, he says he tries to keep up at a “basic level” on CW whenever he can.

If he runs out of ham radio topics, Alan probably has a wallet full of pictures of his wife, three grown children, six grandchildren, and 12-string electric guitar. He holds a Master's degree from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, has experience as a senior therapist in psychiatric hospital settings and has directed a human services agency and a national charity.
